Can't find your head voice?
By Andy Follin
Are you a singer having trouble finding your 'head voice'? That's because it doesn't exist! Many vocal teachers and singers still refer to 'head' voice and 'chest' voice, but they may as well refer to 'apple' voice and 'banana' voice for the relevance they have to the actual physical production of your voice. It's a throwback two hundred years or so to the early years of vocal teaching when no-one really understood what happened in the larynx and people tried to explain it in vague references to sensations and imagery. The basic problem is that the voice is not produced in the head or the chest - it's always produced in the larynx ('voice box') and is essentially the vibration of the vocal folds (vocal cords) as air passes. As the folds stretch, they get thinner (like an elastic band) and the sensation of tension and resistance changes. For a while, some teachers tried to redefine the voice in terms of Thick and Thin, which is far more useful as it relates directly to the actual physical condition of the vocal folds. Unfortunately, head and chest stubbornly remained, resulting in the confusion that so many feel today. If you're confused by the thought of a voice in your head, I'd recommend a session with a teacher who is trained in more modern, physiologically-sound teaching practices. Estill Voice Training is a method of learning based on a strong foundation of scientific fact. As the only Certified Master Teacher of Estill in the North of England, I can help you understand your voice and give you all the necessary vocal skills to make your career a success.
